Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

I can confirm that when using the package empathy on Ubuntu 10.10 using the steps provided by ijeyanthan that I can reproduce the bug. Therefore I have set this bug to confirmed.

empathy is not a web-browser so that you could open an empty tab, though for the ctrl+c issue there is bug 639603 marking duplicate. thanks for your bug report.
