Bug Description

If totem is launched by the removable media framework using "totem %m", or on the command line using "totem dvd://1" or by launching totem then opening location: dvd:///media/cdrom0 a css encoded dvd will play fine.

However, trying to play that same DVD by clicking "Play Disk 'DVD_NAME'" I get an error. A window pops up stating:

Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it.

Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media.

The Totem developers are saying that DVD support is intentionally disabled since it's not "stable". BUT since Feisty (maybe gnome too?) uses Totem as default DVD player the menu "Play Disk 'DVD_NAME'" should be activated.

I can confirm this. With an updated 7.04 installation. File, play does not work. I get the error message described in this report (Very irritating message by the way! which plugin is necessary! people get angry with such vague messages). When I click open location and write dvd:// It is possible to play it.

I can confirm the same bug in Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon. I was trying to play a DVD movie x(title) via Totem/Movie/Play Disc x, but I didn't succeed. ("Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media".) I must admit that if you just put a DVD movie into your DVD - rom it is played automatically with Totem.

Just click on Movie -> Play Disc 'name here' and after this message displays:

"Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it.
Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media"

After I click on "More information about media plugins" and it gives this error on the console:

"Error: Failed to send command: 500 command not parseable"

With --debug I got the same thing...

After I click on "More information about media plugins", it correctly open firefox.
I used the commande line to play dvd :
$ totem /media/<dvd_media>

BTW:
What about replacing this buggy Totem in Ubuntu with SMPlayer 0.6 rc2 ?

that's not an useful comment on this bug, you likely want to use an user list or similar
