Bug Description

ubuntu-6.10-alternate-i386.iso fails to start install.

mb specs

1.5GHz C7 powered 17x17cm Mini-ITX motherboard with CN700 chipset, Gigabit LAN, 2x SATA with RAID 0/1, 2x IDE, One DDR2 DIMM slot, TV outputs and 4x USB 2.0 Ports. RoHS compliant.

Specifications: 1.5GHz C7 CPU with integrated fan and heatsink; CN700 chipset; Supports up to 1GB on 240-pin DDR2 400/533 DIMM socket; 6 channel audio; Integrated Unichrome Pro graphics with MPEG-2 decoder acceleration and 70 pin LVDS/TTL/DVI connector (requires add-on card).

Kernel panics are reported between choosing option on CD boot and choosing your lanugage.

This occurs on:
 install text mode
 check cd for defects

Not tried with other options. Memtest86 reports no errors with the ram.

ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso is currently installing fine on the same hardware

ps
why cant I have ubuntu-6.10-alternate-i386.iso as the package with the bug (I know its not a package, but I feel I should be able to file a bug against it)

After installing dapper drake and attempting to to a dsit-upgrade to edgy a reboot has the same problem.

Appears to be the Edgy kernel rather than the install media

thanks for the bug report.

I assigned this to the kernel as per the previous commenter's notice.

Installation bugs may go to three different packages:
1. casper - if the LiveCD (i.e. Desktop CD) doesn't start at all
2. ubiquity - if the installer of the Live CD fails
3. debian-installer - if the installer of the Alternative CD fails. Hope this helps.

quick_via_abnormal poweroff should have been removed from the kernel when the ACPI version in edgy was updated. I'll try to include this in the next stable upload if possible, since according to
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0610.2/0584.html it will only help, not hinder, if it is removed.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New".

Thanks,
