Bug Description

After upgrading from 0.1~svn-r533312-0ubuntu1 to 0.1-0ubuntu1, I can no longer access any wireless networks.

0.1~svn-r533312-0ubuntu1 works fine, and lists wireless networks in the context menu. The gnome network manager applet also works fine.

Selecting the 'Enable Wireless' option makes no difference.

I see the following in /var/log/daemon.log when knetworkmanager starts:

Nov 1 18:33:14 localhost NetworkManager: <information>^IUpdating allowed wireless network lists.
Nov 1 18:33:14 localhost NetworkManager: <WARNING>^I nm_dbus_get_networks_cb (): error received: org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks - org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks.

From reading various reports on these error messages, I get the impression that this is due to knetworkmanager not finding any suitable wireless devices. lshal shows the following for my wireless device:

udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_11_24_90_6b_dc'
  info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_11_24_90_6b_dc' (string)
  linux.subsystem = 'net' (string)
  linux.hotplug_type = 2 (0x2) (int)
  net.80211.mac_address = 73627888604 (0x1124906bdc) (uint64)
  info.product = 'WLAN Interface' (string)
  net.interface_up = false (bool)
  net.arp_proto_hw_id = 1 (0x1) (int)
  net.linux.ifindex = 3 (0x3) (int)
  net.address = '00:11:24:90:6b:dc' (string)
  net.interface = 'eth1' (string)
  net.physical_device = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_14e4_4320' (string)
  info.capabilities = {'net', 'net.80211'} (string list)
  info.category = 'net.80211' (string)
  info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_14e4_4320' (string)
  linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/class/net/eth1' (string)

I just installed edgy, along with knetworkmanager 0.1-0ubuntu1, and had a similar problem: knetworkmanager did not show any wireless networks, nor show the menu option of creating (adding) a new one. at the same time, wireless assistant did show two detected networks.

I tried tinkering with all of system settings -> network settings, wireless assistant, knetworkmanager and iwconfig. the latter finally got things moving, after which wireless assistant showed the connection active. after some more tinkering and a reboot, knetworkmanager finally joined the party and reported the detected networks, to which I could then connect with knetworkmanager (wpa). so:

1. knetworkmanager should show the detected networks just as well as wireless assistant, which did (regardless of being connected or not)

2. it would be nice if knetworkmanager could do whatever it is iwconfig does, to allow a connection to be established (regardless of previously being detected?)

Is this still an issue? I am unable to reproduce this.

I just installed Feisty final version. no problems until I restarted. now I cant see anything and all of my changes need to be vie iwconfig. also my wireless connection won't work with a static address, it must be DHCP. I've installed KUbuntu 4 times and the problem still persists

Just upgraded to Feisty (from Dapper). In dapper I could connect using knetworkmanager, but not with wpa_supplicant directly. Now it is the other way around. When I boot, I get the "KNetworkManager is connected" pop-up, and it shows the wired connection icon (I do /not/ have a wired connection).

When I click on the icon it says "Wired Devices" but doesn't list any, and no mention of Wireless at all.

I can connect just fine on the command line:
sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf &
sudo dhclient wlan0

(I just thought: could it be because I renamed the device wlan0 from eth1?)

BTW, I am using a ThinkPad Z60m.

I have the same issue on my Thinkpad. I have a Linksys WPC11 v.4 802.11b laptop card. knetworkmanager, back when I used Edgy, worked well. That said, both the feisty beta and final version don't work. It doesn't list any wireless networks, even when I am near a couple of them. iwconfig is my only way to connect to these networks, as knetworkmanager shows nothing useful.

However, I am able to manually setup a configuration for my wireless card through knetworkmanager, and it will work. I just have to sit for a minute or two while the "Saving Settings" dialog box hogs the foreground.

I am using a Thinkpad T23, using Feisty Final. My card is configured using ndiswrapper.
