Upstart should be documented, or at least mentioned in server guide.

Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Just took a look through the 10.10 manual. There is still nothing about upstart.

The way we start services is not at all how server administrators coming from other platforms will expect. I think this should be covered, or at least touched on.

Mike, I agree completely.

We've recently created a set of best practices and helpful tips for Upstart users here:

http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/

I believe linking to this would be an important first step for starting an upstart section of the server guide.

The Ubuntu Documentation team has moved the serverguide out of the ubuntu-docs source, it is now under the serverguide project. Moving this bug accordingly.

Upstart is going away (at least for server tasks) in 16.04 LTS so I'm going to close this Won't Fix. I agree it would make sense to add if we were sticking with it - instead I'd guess we're going to have to mention systemd in the 16.04 guide.

Precise is affected by this. Unfortunately, I can't apply to Trusty because of the way we manage branches in the serverguide project. Trunk is currently pointing to Trusty and it would be confusing to target Trunk.

Given that, and if you want to leave the door open for fixing it in trusty, the main bug task was closed prematurely IMO.

Peter: We only keep using the trunk branch until such a time that we decide we need to split trusty away from trunk. Perhaps it is time to make that move.
