Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I have ubuntu live cd.
Whenever I choose the Try Ubuntu option, the screen goes blank and freezes. And the only way to exit is to poweroff my laptop.
This happens not only with ubuntu but also with fedora, opensuse, puppy, knoppix.
The only way to run is to use text mode or vesa mode. But since my laptop has a 15.6inch screen 1024x768 resolution looks ugly.

Amazingly, only ubuntu 9.04 is able to run normally. It even supports my 1366x768 resolution. If it can run then there must be a way to run all the other versions of ubuntu.

I have reported this bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/693272
but using ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel package

@bugbot - since i am new to bugs.launchpad.net, I am not friendly with terms used here.

Does "affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) " mean I have to update my xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Whatever I did the following
removed the xserver-xorg-video-intel package
using sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
and then downloaded the new package from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel
and installed it
than reconfigured xorg using Xorg -configure
and copied it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

But nothing happened my problem is still tere.

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

Please also ensure this bug has tags for each Ubuntu release
that the bug is confirmed as affecting.

Problem for GM45 intel laptop chip also exists on fresh 11.04 (natty).

You can see only a very dark login window - no backlight.

Tried xorg-edgers & kernel ppa's to no avail.

Only setting i915.modeset=0 shows bright enough display, but that limits X to 1024x768

I don't know about 11.04 natty but this error does come up on ubuntu 9.10. Even I can use compiz at full settings.
But on Ubuntu 10.04, I get this error.

Strangely, this error does not come on Ubuntu 10.10. But I could not use compiz.

Suyash Mohan, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
