Bug Description

Binary package hint: kcontrol

Installation of bitmap fonts does not work. If I try to install konsole bitmap fonts, either directly from konsole or by hand, it results in fonts not being installed. When I try again to install them in fonts:/Personal, it asks me wether I want to overwrite old font.pcf of size 0 bytes. I've tried to gunziped the font the result is the same.

Thanks,

Steph

I have exactly the same problem. Version: Kubuntu Dapper with KDE 3.5.5 from kubuntu.org. But as far as I remember, it also happened with default KDE from Kubuntu Dapper.

By doing some googling, I was able to find a workaround. By default the bitmap fonts are disabled, so you need to run these two commands:

1) sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config
Answer the questions, and specifically, answer yes to the question about enabling bitmap fonts.

2) sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
This will update the font cache etc., and at least for me, the bitmap fonts became immediately available after starting new programs. There was a minor, easily solvable side-effect, though: firefox by default uses fonts like helvetica, times etc., which happen to be bitmap fonts. Just go to the preferences, and change these to some scalable fonts that you like.
