Bug Description

Binary package hint: phonon

Clean install of a Natty daily build ISO from 18th Dec. Using the GStreamer backend for phonon I can't get any audio out of anything, not even KDE notifications. Video files play video but no audio comes out. A playback stream is visible in KMix and the volume is up full, but nothing can be heard.

Non-phonon apps (eg mplayer) work correctly.

I installed the phonon Xine backend and that, too, works correctly.

The GStreamer backend has always been a crock, why the switch?

Some updates to gstreamer arrived today. I now get some sound, but it's very broken up and mostly sounds like a fart.

I get the following output from dragonplayer if I start it from a console:

QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(Solid::DeviceInterface::Type) error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(Solid::DeviceInterface::Type) error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(Solid::DeviceInterface::Type) error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(Solid::DeviceInterface::Type) error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

I do not get this output when using the Xine backend for phonon, and audio still works properly with that backend.

That is an issue in the KDE integration bit of phonon and should be fixed in KDE 4.6 final.
