I created a test user and was able to login to KDE again. Seems that our user profile somehow got messed up.

haven't tried that.. can someone else confirm this, so we could close this bug.

I just backed up my home-folder and reinstalled kubuntu. When thinking
about all the up- and downgrades I made, this solution would be the
best, but the fastest definitly yours, rgbiernat.

I remember that I removed the .kde folder without changes.. Could you,
rgbiernat, remove the .kde folder from your home folder and check?

Thanks!

This problem took me hours to troubleshoot.

I also thought that the .kde folder was the one which prevented me from logging in. Renamed it. But without success.
This one eventually helped me - deleting the kde-cache for my user in /var/tmp as suggested here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=846216 (last post)

After that I could access my profile again without problems.

Changed in kde4libs (Ubuntu):
