Bug Description
Binary package hint: hal
edgy 6.1
Current Operating System: Linux rg-desktop 2.6.17-10 i686
During system bootup, after restart, received error message hal failed to initialize.
Event: System bootup finished, plugged in LG 1gb usb flash drive, complete system freeze.
Turned machine off. reboot. hal error message received.
edgy seems to be having problems mounting usb removable media. no problems with same media in breezy.
2nd scenario: plug 2gb pny sd card into reader, does not auto mount. auto mount and hot plug are both option selected as menu option.
Temporarily resolve sd problem by opening up removable drive dialog box and closing. the system then mounts sd.

The automount failure is due to hal not running.
What happens if you start hal in debugging mode, as described on the second hal f of https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/DebuggingRe movableDevices ? Does it terminate itself after a while or does it stay running?
Can you please attach the resulting log file? Thank you!
