Bug Description

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10. Now I can't install any software from the Software Update Center. I get a message that there is a problem with aptdaemon. I was then asked to report the problem here.

Is there some way to reset aptdaemon?

I now tried "apt-get clean" and "apt-get update" and then "apt-get install" of the mysql client i tried to install with Ubuntu Software center and it seems that that solved the problems.
I can now install from the software center again.

Thanks Kim! It worked.

Okay, so this problem occured when I was installing mysql server on my computer. I had chosen to install the microsoft fonts as well and then for some reason killed the process in between.
After that the software center stopped working and I kept getting the programming error message.

I did what you tried and the issue got resolved!

I am not technically savvy enough to load any programs on linux manually. I did try the 1st fix by Cyril, mentioned above, then rebooted. Still having the problem.

Tried to install wine to run windows programs, but the same problem popped up. After that any application i try to install from terminal or software center comes up with the same problem. I am getting the same message for any installation if I try to uninstall wine (which has not been installed properly).

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 last week and have been getting the following message ever since:

warning, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 90526 package 'virtualbox-3.1':
 error in Config-Version string '3.1.4-57640_Ubuntu_karmic': invalid character in revision number

Have tried "sudo dpkg --configure -a" and deinstalled/reinstalled VirtualBox.3.2

I presume the message is harmless?
Just looks unprofessional.

The moment I updated Ubuntu 10.10 with all the regular updates the
Ubuntu updatecenter presented, the problem was solved and I could
upload the programs I wanted.

Not solved after an update for me. System has been upgraded over time through about 3 or 4 releases. The 10.10 upgrade is the first time such an error message has occurred. Apart from showing up each time apt-get is run, system seems to be running fine. The only other lost functionality through this upgrade has been hibernation and manually having to install a library for Kjot.

Please don't add you issue to this bug report, since it is a completely different one. It seems that your system was damaged. Either by deleting important files or file system errors.

I too have experienced this error with the following details;

Details of the error are given as below;

    return self._simulate_helper(trans, status_path)

    pm.get_archives(fetcher, self._list, self._records)
SystemError: E:I wasn't able to locate file for the subtitleripper package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.

I tried the "apt-get clean" and "apt-get update" and then "apt-get install" much further up the thread and I get the following messages;

"apt-get clean" tells me;

#E: Could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the download directory

"apt-get update" tells me;

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

and "apt-get install" tells me;

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

I'm new to Linux so have absolutely no idea how to get round this, or implement a manual fix. I recognise a drive letter when I see when, which I'm assuming is what the E: is, but I can't see that I'm actually connected to an E drive anywhere. I'm totally lost!!

This error is stopping me from uninstalling or installing anything at all.

I tried the steps listed in this thread, and nothing worked. I, too, got the /var/lib/dpkg/ error, even though I was running sudo and no other update tool was being invoked.

My workaround is to right click on the file in question and open it with archive manager. That worked for me. I guess the Software Center is a bit too slick for its own good.

@ Esteban Clarke :
You must be super user. It is necessary d' to write sudo at the beginning.
Like that : "sudo apt-get clean" , "sudo apt-get update" , "sudo apt-get install"
