Bug Description
Binary package hint: kdm
Did a fresh text install of Kubuntu 6.10 from the dvd; as part of the process there was a keyboard layout detection wizard. This wizard (correctly) identified the keyboard layout to be used as us-intl, and the keyboard actually used this layout during the install, which also added the following to the keyboard section of xorg.conf:
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
Option "XkbVariant" "intl"
Option "XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch"
Now booting up, I cannot login in kdm; it misbehaves in the same way as kdesu does in Bug #54564: login will fail when the password contains certain characters like ' or ". Upon pressing such a key, two stars (**) appear at once in the password dialog, and the password always fails.
Interestingly, other keys like ^~` produce only a single star immediately, suggesting that these are directly used (without waiting for another character to form âñè etc.) which would also be wrong.
The password itself is set correctly, and console login does work.

Having a similar problem that may well be related: kdm misbehaves when typing the first character of a password -- the entire password text field fills up and will not accept any keyboard input (like home, bksp, delete, even return). Many times an xserver restart is required by logging in through tty1 (ctrl+alt+bksp doesn't work).
Using an Logitech mx3000 keyboard and mouse on the usb bus (haven't tried ps/2).
