Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdm

Did a fresh text install of Kubuntu 6.10 from the dvd; as part of the process there was a keyboard layout detection wizard. This wizard (correctly) identified the keyboard layout to be used as us-intl, and the keyboard actually used this layout during the install, which also added the following to the keyboard section of xorg.conf:

    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us"
    Option "XkbVariant" "intl"
    Option "XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch"

Now booting up, I cannot login in kdm; it misbehaves in the same way as kdesu does in Bug #54564: login will fail when the password contains certain characters like ' or ". Upon pressing such a key, two stars (**) appear at once in the password dialog, and the password always fails.
Interestingly, other keys like ^~` produce only a single star immediately, suggesting that these are directly used (without waiting for another character to form âñè etc.) which would also be wrong.

The password itself is set correctly, and console login does work.

Having a similar problem that may well be related: kdm misbehaves when typing the first character of a password -- the entire password text field fills up and will not accept any keyboard input (like home, bksp, delete, even return). Many times an xserver restart is required by logging in through tty1 (ctrl+alt+bksp doesn't work).

Using an Logitech mx3000 keyboard and mouse on the usb bus (haven't tried ps/2).

Since Bug #54564 was fixed in KDE 3.5.6, can you confirm that this was fixed as well?

Negative, it's not fixed in kde 3.5.6. Behaviour has changed though; ' and " now result in one rather than two stars being (directly) printed. Just like in the original bug report none of the other dead keys work, so effectively Xorg's intl keyboard setting seem to be completely ignored.

Additionally (tested in the username field), ' can only be written using ALTGR + ' as just typing the character itself results in ´

Problem still happens in gutsy, pretty much as described in my last comment

Hi jcfp,

Is this issue still rearing its ugly head with any of the latest releases? If so, any information that you can provide that you think may help us troubleshoot this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Still with the same xorg keyboard setting, it is now possible to write accented characters correctly in the username field of kdm (the issue of typing ' resulting in ` is also gone there).

Unfortunately, in the password field things still don't work. Since I can't find any way to make kdm display what I type in that field in plain text, I don't know what it is actually doing. A password with ' in it is still can only be written using «ALTGR + '» rather than «' + SPACE» as one would expect (trying to use plain ' also fails).

I have almost the same problem: the difference is that it appears after I log out my session. My password contains a # character, entered using « AltGr + " » on a fr layout. If I restart X (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace), the password field works with AltGr.

Requested information will be supplied once I update to Intrepid (29 Nov 2008 at the latest). I need my system for work, and don't have time or resources to test beforehand, esp. with bugs like this that cannot easily be checked from a live-cd. Thanks for your patience.

With Kubuntu 8.10 and KDE 4.1.3 behaviour is the same as I reported previously for Kubuntu Hardy with KDE 3.5.9: in the username field things work as expected, in the password field they still don't.

I'm also reopening bug #54564 since kdesudo in kubuntu intrepid also seems to suffer from this defect.
