Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Totem thinks DVDs are interlaced and applies deinterlacing filters, but the fact is they are not interlaced and deinterlacing filters poorly affect image quality.
Tested on PAL DVD with and without libdvdcss and on NTSC DVD with libdvdcss in Maverick amd64 with the latest updates.

I noticed recently that DVD's played with totem appeared to shake rapidly up and down, as if the odd-numbered frames were displayed a pixel higher than the even-numbered frames. After checking the "Disable deinterlacing of interlaced videos" checkbox under Preferences->Display, the problem went away.

I assume this is the same problem.

It makes totem quite unpleasant to use for DVD's.

I didn't have the problem after the initial upgrade to Maverick, so it may have been introduced by a later upgrade.

+1 to Bruce Fields's problem, which affects me too. His workaround fixes it, too (thanks!). Ubuntu 10.10, totem 2.32.0.

Checking the "Disable deinterlacing of interlaced videos" checkbox under Preferences > Display doesn't fix this for me.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
