Bug Description

Binary package hint: qcad

After installing qcad, I was happily editing my document, starting with lines, but when I got to added text nothing appeared. I noticed that the font selection dialog was blank, so figured it might have something to do with fonts. I then discovered that "fonts" where mentioned in the package description of qcad-data, installed that, and then re-opened my document. Lo and behold, there were my dozen test texts scattered all over the place! So, qcad will in fact add text without qcad-data installed, but is unable to display them or configure their font type.

As a result, I think the qcad package should Depends or at the very least Recommends qcad-data.

Environment:
Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx", amd64

Thank you for your bug report.

qcad does recommend qcad-data, is it possible that you removed it or installed without recommends?

Jonathan: Do you think it would be better if it was a hard depends
instead of recommends? Or should we keep it recommends since it is
possible to use qcad without qcad-data?

Also, you both might be interested in a new development in qcad.
Debian is removing qt3 after squeeze, and RibbonSoft has not released
a GPLed version of qt4 qcad, so qcad will be removed from debian soon.
The debian qcad maintainers are now beginning to maintain the qt4 port
of qcad, called "libreCAD" www.caduntu.org (will be moving to
www.librecad.ord soon).

While not in Debian or Ubuntu yet, you can find a PPA of the package here:

For Ubuntu 10.04 use:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/librecad
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install librecad

for Ubuntu 10.10 and Natty use:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install librecad

Documentation isn't built as of now, but it is the same as qcad. If
you have time, please check out that package and report bugs either to
upstream or to me directly.

Marking as wontfix, since:

 * We will be removed in future releases of Ubuntu
 * Installing recommends is the default behaviour

Changed in qcad (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
status: Invalid → Won't Fix
