Bug Description

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

I have a netbook Acer 1830T with wired Ethernet driver atl1c and wireless brcm80211 (BCM 43225)
Drivers and firmware are loaded well (as seen in dmesg) and interfaces eth0 and wlan0 are visible in ifconfig -a
I log into KDE with locale uk_UA.UTF-8
I left-click on Plasma item for network management, and 2-column menu (or plasmoid) appears.
Initially it has [ ] 'enable wireless' turned off (down on the left), and the button '+ More' down on the right.
When I try to enable wireless by mouse click, check mark appears there but goes back off after short time.
Also, '+ More' button disappears. On next clicks in 'enable wireless', button '+ More' appears for a short time, then goes back away, together with check mark.

Please advise what should I check on my system to know more details. Or when this strange behaviour will be fixed .
Thank you.

mostly the same happens when I remove knm-runtime and use plain nm-applet from network-manager package.
probably this is related to NM overall, not to its KDE UI

wicd works fine, otoh. so the driver&firmware are allright.

affects: plasma-widget-networkmanagement (Ubuntu) → network-manager (Ubuntu)

Upgrade of 0.8.3+git.20101209t061929.638fb18-0ubuntu1 to 0.8.3+git.20101219t181118.e919218-0ubuntu1 did not change this behaviour .
In nm-applet menu, 'Enable wireless' mark is turned on and off as intended, but on the top of the menu, wireless is left disabled, grayed-out, and sensed wireless networks are not shown .

wicd still works fine and I am using it instead, so far.

exactly the same happens here. fresh install of today's (2011-01-16) kubuntu natty snapshot. the proprietary STA driver is loaded and works fine with wicd. The network manager does not show any networks when hitting on the "scan" button.

The behaviour is not improved with NM package version
0.8.3+git.20101219t181118.e919218-0ubuntu1
and plasma widget pkg.v.
0.9~svn1176084-0ubuntu3

please do something. like, notify upstream or what. thank you in advance.

Wladimir,

Please use 'apport-collect 689529' to attach debugging information to this bug. We especially need to see the contents of the file /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManage.state. Thanks!

I am also affected by this bug. I think it is a duplicate of:

Well, I blacklisted the module 'acer_wmi', and Gnome&KDE network management utilities started working again.
I only needed to create this file :

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-acer.conf
blacklist acer_wmi
