Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Neither the installer or the OS can run without nomodeset argument.

That prevents installing or running Ubuntu on Asus G51 notebook for average users.

I can confirm this problem. I was able to install ubuntu 10.04 but after install you can't start Xs. This is solvable disabling noveau from grub and uninstalling noveau in text mode. In ubuntu 10.10 is other history, you can't even run the installation and the only way I could install it was downloading the special text mode ubuntu iso.

I think, ubuntu should always install using max video compatibility and during installation ask if you want to use noveau or privative drivers.

I can confirm this bug too. I try to install ubuntu 10.10 in my Asus GJ51 with an Nvidia Geforce GTS 360M video card and, after choosing "install ubuntu", the screen shows multiples little squares of video noise (I don't find a best description) so I'm not allowed to do nothing. To "resolve" this, I perform the following steps:

1.- I must install ubuntu using the Alternative iso.
2.- In console mode, disable the noveau drivers.
3.- Download the official nvidia.
4.- Install the official drivers.

So, with no post installation actions , I'm not able to install nor use Ubuntu. :(

Me too I'm also affected by this bug, to re-install my machine, I install 10.04 and I upgraded it. I hope this will be solved.

Hey Lox,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

I think the live CD runs well on my laptop. The upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 went well.

But now my laptop is at the shop for repair, someone else can confirm that it is fixed in Natty ?

Can you boot with 'drm.debug=0x06' added to the kernel cmdline (edit it via the grub menu), and attach the dmesg output here. I assume that the virtual terminals don't work either, so you probably need to install 'openssh-server' too and connect to the machine via ssh to get the logs.

Not sure if that is different from previous versions, but:

Oneiric A3 displayed a similar "maze" as before (Lucid, Maverick), but after a while, a mouse cursor appeared and I could control it from the touchpad. Weird. I also can get into a tty, too, which I don't think was possible before. Did so from the live-cd/usb, if that matters.

dmesg output is attached (live-cd, can't install oneiric because of ubiquity throwing a tantrum)
