Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

Adept sometimes fills in the description field for a package from the data from another package.

For example, a few minutes ago on my system, the klettres-data description was: "subversion io slave for KDE", which is actually the description of a package that I installed and uninstalled yesterday: kdesdk-kio-plugins.

I have seen this happen several times now: under certain circumstances (I don't know what) adept displays the details of a package X that has been installed or uninstalled recently, in place of the correct description for package Y.

I'm sorry I cannot give more details. This is a sporadic bug that I cannot produce at will. It is an extremely annoying bug, though, because it means that one can easily be led to install a package X which one thinks does something when in fact it does something completely different. This has happened to me a couple of times now.

What version of Kubuntu are you using? Are you still experiencing this problem on latest Edgy or Feisty?

I have dapper (since it's LTS); I am not running Edge or Feisty.

I am running edgy and I have seen this error very many times. I attach two screenshots (put into one file).

I also feel I should remark that this happens only when I type anything in the search field to narrow down the package list.

I frequently see this problem on Kubuntu Feisty.

For example I open adept and type in "ardour" in the top search box. I see 5 ardour packages, but the 2nd of them "ardour-gtk" has a bad short description: "d on a large". Expanding the ardour-gtk item I see the following longer description

"Terminates connections for idle users.

Autolog terminates connections considered to be idle based on a large
variety of parameters."

So this seems to be the description belonging to autolog and the short description is the end of the second line of text. The package info on the right shows Maintainer="Paul Telford" (maintainer of autolog), but candidate version = 0.99.3-1 (the version of ardour-gtk).

Pressing "Fetch updates" clears up the problem, but something's screwy clearly.

I have this same problem with Hardy / amd64.

When searching for firefox in adept, I noticed that firefox-2 has the
description "A literate-programming tool for C/C++/Fortran/Ratfor",
which is the descrption for fweb. The detailed description for
firefox-2 is empty, however fweb has the right thing.
Neither of them are installed.

I saw this in my Gutsy system and i still see it after upgraded to Hardy. It looks like it only happens when you do a search.

Hi.

I'm using an up-to-date Kubuntu Hardy 32 bit and I've noticed this problem a couple of times. I've attached a screenshot of the most recent occurrence.

brltty seems to be installed on my computer -- must've come on the cd.

Restarting Adept doesn't help. After fetching updates Blender got the right description.
