Bug Description

The progress window duplicates its title.

The up-to-date GNOME HIG says:

>> Progress windows should have a title representing the overall operation: for example “Copying Files”, “Installing”, or “Calling”. (As with other window titles, do not end progress window titles with an ellipsis.)"

i attached a screenshot, further illustrating the problem.

Thanks for your bugreport.

What do you suggest to use for the title instead?

Changed in synaptic:
status: New → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → Low

The title is fine, it just shouldn't be repeated as a heading.

errm doesn't the HIG say, we should dispay the progress bar inline in th main window?

"If progress of a task makes a window temporarily unusable, do not present a modal dialog-like progress window in front of it. Instead, present progress somewhere in the original window, making all its other elements temporarily insensitive. This helps reduce visual clutter."

i think that is the greater violation, fixing that would make this bug report obsolete.

added Ayatana Design, for further discussion, the same problem appeared here:

I agree with frederik that the larger violation of the HIG should be remedied to fix this situation. Anyone care to design a solution?

The HIG does say that progress windows should be considered if the operation will take more than ten seconds. Hence the need for discussion, I suppose.

One thing to keep in mind is that statusbars tend to be invisible to a lot of users.

yeah, mpt already has a solution for the design problem.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/689984 has the same issue, but follow mpt's thread:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates#Installing shows how he specced out a morphing dialog for this purpose!

great work mpt !!! ;)
