clicking on places, and then on other options brings up failure to open document.

Thanks for reporting this bug. This happened with more people with various applications trying to open the Places.
Please see comment 10 of bug #667071 for a workaround. Marking this one as a duplicate of that, hopefully someone will find what messes up the file associations.
