Bug Description

I have problems connecting to a p1102w via WLAN on Linux. My distribution is Crux 2.7. Hplip 3.10.9 and required libraries have been compiled and installed without problems. In CUPS the printer connection is defined as

        hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_Professional_P1102?ip=192.168.178.10

When I try to print a test page, the job hangs and CUPS reports "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed".
It seems that the hp backend doesn't understand the hp:/net/... connection syntax. However, if I use

        socket://192.168.178.10:9100

it crashes as well, only with different error messages (see below). Note the line "Error: This module is designed to work with HP Printers only".

Attached is the ouput from hp-check -t and the relevant parts of /var/log/cups/error_log for both connection settings.

I hope there is a solution for this, as I really need the WLAN connection.

Regards,
Bernd

That didn't work either. hp-wificonfig didn't recognise the wlan printer when connected to a USB port.

Anyway, I got it working by uninstalling the hplip stuff and installing foo2zjs instead. With this, the printer worked immediately.

I have the same problem with a HP Laserjet Professional P 1132 attached to a Windows Server 2003 machine via USB. Other Windows machines print through network fine, but I can't print from my Ubuntu 10.10

- Installing the printer through System->Administration->Printer locates the printer (via SAMBA) just fine and I can install the driver for it (there are 3 options, all of them are installed ok).
- Cups Web Interface also installs the printer, like described above.
- hp-setup HPLIP Toolbox (HP Device Manager) doesn't find the printer

After installation, trying to print, an error is reported.
Running the diagnosis, depending on the driver used, the message may vary:
- "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
- "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed" "printer requires a binary plugin, run hp-setup"

In both cases, the log (listed below) gives the message: "Error: This module is designed to work with HP Printers only"

I have been using a Lexmark printer for years in the same way, without troubles. My problems only began recently, trying to install HP multifunctional.

Can somebody help me?

I don't use Ubuntu, but had similar problems. I found 2 solutions for
the problem. One is NOT to install hplip, but to use the driver from

  http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/

instead. This works out of the box.

With HPLIP, the driver needs a propriertary plugin, otherwise it doesn't
recognize the printer correctly. Installing the plugin manually didn't
help. I finally called "hp-setup" and let this script download and
install the plugin. THat did the trick - everything worked fine.

The plugin (hplip-3.11.7-plugin.run) fails to install. Also hp-wificonfig fails, so WiFi-connection cannot be established.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the bug in HPLIP. Please follow following instructions to help us understand the issue.

1) Reinstall HPLIP from
     http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html.

2)Run "hp-plugin -g > plugin.log " command in root mode and follow instructions. Then attach plugin.log file.

3) Run "hp-check -t > hpcheck.log" and paste/attach the complete contents of hpcheck.log here.

4) "hp-wificonfig -g > wificonfig.log" and attach the wificonfig.log file.

Thanks,

Hi Hans,

Can you try the following work around to configure through Wifi. Download the Windows full solution driver for this device.

1. Double click on the exe to extract and install.
2. Select "Configure the device through Wifi first..." and continue.
3. Select "Advanced" option to select the wireless network manually.
4. Finally print a test page. An IP address will be printed.
5. Now try to configure the device in Linux using IP address.

Please let me know on the same.

Thanks and Regards,

Hello Hans,

The whole purpose of having windows machine and configuring wifi on device is to get the IP address for the device(printer), which unfortunately is not possible currently for this device in Linux . Once device gets the IP address then you can setup printer in Linux by running following command in terminal.

==> hp-setup <IP address>

Hi,
that does not help. The hp-setup <IP address> fails, even if there is an IP address assigned. See all the logs before wificonfig-no_IP.log.

Did you generate wificonfig-no_IP.log only after configuring wifi in windows OS??? If you don't do that, then it will not print the correct IP address. Just to have to correct and valid IP address you need to configure the device(wifi) in windows.

Dear Sanjay,
Before reseting the printer, wireless printing worked in Windows but not in Ubuntu. wificonfig-no_IP.log was done after founding out that wireless installation still fails, even though we managed to install the plugin finally.

There is now IP assigned to the printer again.

The hp-wificonfig still fails with the current hplip-3.11.10 (the device in USB port is not found). Is there any estimation, when the wireless printing will be introduced to hplip?

I abandoned HPLIP in favour of foo2zjs (http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/),
which works out of the box without any problems.

Unfortunately, I doesn't think foo2zjs may help configure P1102w wireless connection.

Thank you for answer!
I check HPLIP 3.12.1 in Kubuntu 13.04 (hplip package from repository) now wireless configuration wizard showed up but wireless configuration is still unsuccessful. There is two errors that appear on step 5:
Error message in hp-wificonfig console output: "warning: Request failed with Response code 404. HostName not found."
Error message in hp-wificonfig windows: "The Ethernet cable is plugged in which will prevent you from connecting to a wireless network. To connect wirelessly, remove the cable and try again. (VSA000)"
But this MPF doesn't have Ethernet adapter. (Access point work in 802.11g mode; Encryption mode: WPA2-Personal)

This issue reproducible on your side?

And, sorry, another correction: this is not MFP, but just laser printer with wireless module.
