Subject: Out of date Qt makes Indian languages totally unusable in Qt/KDE apps

Package: libqt3c102
Version: 3:3.2.3-2
Severity: grave

The version of qt3 currently in sarge/sid is broken with regard to Indian
language fonts. This renders KDE entirely unusable for people who want to
read/write in Hindi, Bengali etc. I had long suspected that this had been
fixed in a later Qt version. Today I finally got some time to download
and compile Qt 3.3.2 which is the latest I could find on the Trolltech
site. I made .debs from this using the existing debian packaging (minus a
couple of patches and apps which didn't work) and installed them along
with KDE 3.2.2. After a restart of KDE, everything began to work
perfectly.

So please package Qt 3.3.2 as soon as possible. If you are unable to do
so for some reason, let me know so I can do an NMU.

Hello,

The lack of Indic language support in Qt 3.2 is not a bug in the Qt
packages - this feature simply wasn't added until 3.3. Thus this request
is really a wishlist item, no matter how convenient the missing
functionality is. Thus I'm downgrading this bug from RC status.

In any case, Qt 3.3 packages are now available in Experimental, and the
maintainer has stated his intention to add 3.3 to Sid shortly.

Cheers,
Christopher Martin

This is not true. It was working with Debian 3.x Qt packages prior to
3.2.

It is release critical because it is a regression and one that renders KDE
completely unusable -- not just inconvenient -- for Indian language users.
Although I didn't try it, I wager other languages with complex scripts
also suffered.

Yes I tried them and I already told madkiss they fix the problem. But
please leave the bug as is until the packages actually hit sid.

Hmmm, I checked the Qt docs, and they claim Indian language support was
added/massively improved in 3.2 (not 3.3 as I remembered), and Qt 3.3
contained general font fixes. Odd, then, that 3.2 would break the
apparently pre-existing Indian language support... Anyway, I apologize
for not checking as I should have.

Perhaps, but the definition of an "important bug" is "a bug which has a
major effect on the usability of a package, without rendering it
completely unusable to everyone." That would seem to match the severity
of this bug, since only a (relatively) small subset of users are
affected, however drastically.

As long as this bug doesn't block 3.2.3-4 from hitting Sarge, I'm content.

It is a regression compared to earlier versions in testing/unstable.
Woody probably not. In any case I've already told Martin he can close it
when Qt is ready to move to sid. (I think the move is blocking for some
other reason isn't it?)

Ok, I'll leave the question of closure to Martin's discretion; I am,
however, downgrading it since it's not a blocker for sarge.
