Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

when skype is running, Empathy's Contact List does not show or manage my Skype contacts.
This is a regression, since Ubuntu's former default IM client "Pidgin" managed Skype contacts, too.

Pidgin did not manage Skype contacts by default, there was a plugin which could do that, but as far as I know, it needed a running skype instance to work. Now there is a new API available for development available for Skype partners called SkypeKit, which should be able to work without skype running. It would be nice indeed if ubuntu would ship with skype empathy integration.

I've checked, and it appears that SkypeKit is not available for Linux, but only for Windows and Mac. :(

Try what it feels like via today's Pidgin, is what i suggest!
The integration feels good, even though it is a little flawed..

With bubbles from Notify OSD and indicators in the Messaging Menu, Skype
feels so much more like home!
Until Telepathy speaks Skype, i can live with having a client running in the
background.

plugins framework for empathy is not yet implemented. and I dont think empathy developers would like to do this in the main empathy source.

then it's a telepathy bug, since telepathy has the services plugged into its
framework.
Skype would then be just another service, plugged into telepathy, just like
Google Talk, Yahoo Chat, Facebook Chat, Jabber, MSN etc..
How are these things called in Telepathy? Service Modules? ahh.. got it:
Conntection Managers.

So what this bug wants is a new connection manager for Skype within
Telepathy..

affects: empathy (Ubuntu) → meta-telepathy (Ubuntu)

There seems to be a pidgin-skype source package which ships an empathy-skype binary package, although it's non-free so can't be installed by default in Ubuntu. If it isn't working then I guess it's up to that package to fix.

Is it still relevant with the version of this plugin which only provide Skype web support? I don't think so but maybe it should be verified?
