Does this bug affect any applications that aren't linked against
libgtk1.2? If not, how can you be sure it's X's fault?

Oh, , I do not know why reportbug didn't report the version. It is
version 4.3.0-5

audacity and vmware ARE linked against libgtk1.2 (dynamicly)
Very easy (well not so..) The applications worked remotely from other X
and also they worked with the X version 4.3.0-0ds4 installed (Which was
the version I used bevor).

Yes. I know.
I'm asking you if the bug affects any applications that *AREN'T* linked

What do you mean by "remotely from other X"?
If the X server 4.3.0-5 is running on host A, and the client is running
on host A, do you see the problem?
If the X server 4.3.0-5 is running on host A, and the client is running
on host B (displaying to host A), do you see the problem?
If the X server 4.2.1-16 is running on host A, and the client is running

I login from a system with xserver 4.2.1-12.1 installed to the system
with the new x installed by ssh. (So the libgtk is used from the host
with the error but not the Xserver.) With this constalation I can start
the applications without problemes.

yes.

Didn't test this case as I have none of the applications with the
problem on them. But I can try it with audacity... vmware whould be more
problematic as it need kernel modules which is somwhere problematic on
this host.

Same as above. But I can not remember such problemes on this host.

No. Then everythink works well. (Version -12.1 on sarge, not -16)

Hello,
after many tests installing different versiones of X i found the
following (it was nightmare as I often had to use dpkg --force-all -P to
deinstall stuff bevore installing other versions):
The problemes are diverted to two cases. One is vmware and another is
audacity.
VMware:
The problem only happens if
1. X the latest 4.3.0 AND
2. The msttcorefonts
are installed OR
only X early version of 4.3.0 (4.3.0-2 definitively) is installed.
(The combination of msttcorefonts and X V 4.2.* seems to work.)
audacity is a bit more stable (well, the problem is more stable):
There the following two cases has to happen:
1. ANY of the X 4.3.0 packages (official or unofficial) AND
2. locales set (in my case to german: LANG=de_DE LC_ALL=de_DE)
I'm not shure where the bug is realy located.
By now I hide the problem by using no msttcorefonts and calling audacity
without any locale environment set.
Regards
Klaus

Hi,
Please give me more details to track this down. in
particular I need the backtrace and the strace log when this
happened.
Please send me the logs against the steps below.
HOW TO GET THE BACKTRACE:
# apt-get install xlibs-dbg libglib1.2-dbg libgtk1.2-dbg
$ export LD_LIBRARY_
(gdb) run
....
(gdb) bt
HOW TO GET THE STRACE LOG:
# apt-get install strace
$ strace <gtk application> [args if you need] >& <logfilename>
BTW I have changed the severity to 'grave', because
'critical' means
critical
makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole
system) break, or causes serious data loss, or introduces a
security hole on systems where you install the package.
but this problem actually doesn't break *anything*, rather

access to the accounts of users who use the package.

Hi Akira,
There was a (mis)configuration on my system causing this problem.
Sometime back I had added Sun's distribution of Lucida TrueType fonts
to my defoma font list manually with `dfontmgr`. I manually removed the
entries recently, and the Microsoft TrueType fonts no longer caused
gtk1 apps to exit unexpectedly.

Bug fixed for the submitter after removing faulty fonts, and no news on
this plan. I'm changing the severity to important, we need to check if
this bug still need some work before beeing closed but it's not really a

FWIW I'm getting this error from vmare now too.
I have xserver-xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 installed currently.
I don't know of anything obvious that changed to point a finger at.
Will post more information if I find more.

I've found how to avoid and reproduce this problem, at least on my system. The
evidence seems to lead to libgtk having trouble looking up the Trebuchet font
when using the builtin XFree86 TrueType engine against MS truetype fonts.
If I run vmware with this font path I see the problem:
/var/
unix/:7110
unix/:7101
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
If I run vmware with this font path then I don't:
unix/:7110
unix/:7101
/var/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
/usr/
As you can see the only difference is the position of the defoma TrueType
directory relative to the font servers.
My defoma TrueType directory contains the following fonts. Notably it includes
Trebuchet which the ltrace appears to show libgtk bombing out trying to fetch:

Subject: xfree86: breaks different applications with badvalue error
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Package: xfree86
Severity: critical
Tags: sid
Justification: breaks unrelated software
I had to search for long to adress this problem to the X.
When I start on my system vmware (locales dosn't mater) or audacity
(only with non US locales) the applications do not start and give a
error like:
Gdk-ERROR **: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
serial 881 error_code 2 request_code 45 minor_code 0
(The serial might be different.)
When I start such a application from a remote system everythink works.
The problem starts when I updated from the inoficial 4.3.0-0ds4 to the
new official packages.
The problem might be conected to fonts, ttfonts or something this kind.
See also Bug #234994 of the libgtk1.2 package. This seems to be the same
problem.
