instlation of softwares

Recently i have installed Ubuntu 8.10 version, but i am facing some problems to use the above OS.

1) I am not able to install the applications available in the software centre, it is showing the authentication failure even after entering the correct login password .

2)Video files like 3gp, avi, etc is not playing it is asking some plug in missing, but i am not able to install the plug in .

3) I am not able to install the updates available.....

Please help me to solve the above problems ...

ravikiran, ubuntu 8.10 is quite an old ubuntu release and is not supported anymore. i.e. no updates or security fixes are provided. you are recommended to use a later version of ubuntu please see this page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases about current supported ubuntu releases. i am closing this bug now.
