you can find all user edited version of applications here:
~/.local/share/applications/

for example:
~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/Picasa 3/Picasa 3.desktop

When I try and run, for exanple, Spotify, it will only find the .desktop shortcut and open it in gedit. The actual application is not shown at all on the drop down list when i press the down arrow.

There are .desktop files:
~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/Spotify.desktop

as well as .desktop file it tries to open
~/Desktop/Spotify.desktop
