Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm really unsure what I'm doing in regards to this so bear with me.

I'm just trying out the 12/1/2010 i386 Natty daily because I'd tried the iso-testing build yesterday and ended up with a basically unusable desktop. That is I had no panels, clicking on the Ubuntu icon in the upper left hand corner failed to display applications, etc. I could however right click the desktop and create a launcher for gnome-terminal after which I could work from there.

Now, this 12/1 build booted to a nearly blank screen other than the install and examples icons and the apport collect window allowing me to report this bug, so I decided to let apport do it's thing.

Perhaps oddly, I'd been using the 11/29 daily to perform some ubiquity testing and it worked OK, in fact I'd just get the old default Gnome panels.

I should perhaps mention that for several days I've noticed that Natty defaults to no desktop effects with my i945 graphics chip whereas in Maverick and prior releases it had always defaulted to "normal" effects.

I'm a total dummy when it comes to compiz and unity so I doubt I can be very helpful beyond just letting apport do it's thing ;^(

Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

libc6-dbg: installed version 2.12.1-0ubuntu9, latest version: 2.12.1-0ubuntu10
compiz-core: installed version 1:0.9.2.1+glibmainloop2-0ubuntu3, latest version: 1:0.9.2.1+glibmainloop2-0ubuntu4
libc-bin: installed version 2.12.1-0ubuntu9, latest version: 2.12.1-0ubuntu10
libc6: installed version 2.12.1-0ubuntu9, latest version: 2.12.1-0ubuntu10

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!
