Bug Description

When I upgraded from lucid to maverick, GIMP was no longer installed. I went into Synaptic Package Manager to install it. I selected gimp and it says:

gimp:
Depends: gimp-data (<=2.6.10-z) but 2.6.11-1~getdeb1~maverick is to be installed

I looked in the list of repositories and there is no obvious thing to remove.

The error message is of no help in resolving the problem.

Thank you for your bug report. You were/are apparently using unofficial repositories (e.g. getdeb.net or ubuntuupdates.org) that are in conflict with the standard Ubuntu repositories. Remove those sources (in the Synaptic Package Manager: Settings --> Repositories, in the "Other Sources" tab) and press the reload button, you should then be able to install gimp.

Changed in gimp (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

I removed every repository one-by-one. Hitting RELOAD each time. And I still get the message:

gimp:
Depends: gimp-data (<=2.6.10-z) but 2.6.11-1~getdeb1~maverick is to be installed

At the moment, there are no repositories left in the "Other Software" tab.

I still see this as bug.

Your error message still mentions a package from an unofficial repository. Try searching in the package manager for everything with gimp in it and remove those packages. Then try installing again.

Thanks. I appreciate the help.

I was able to install GIMP by some sort of brute force.

I re-added the getdeb third party source into Synaptic Package Manager as:

deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu maverick-getdeb apps

Adding the repository key, strangely didn't allow the app to install as signed:

wget -q -O- http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

I installed it via:

http://www.getdeb.net/install/gimp/2.6.11-1%7Egetdeb1%7Emaverick

which installs it via the Ubuntu Software Centre. But I am forced to accept it as unsigned.

All-in-all, I see this as a problem with Synaptic Package Manager. I think it should be doing a better job here. There's obviously something in my config that is confusing it. And it's error messages aren't helpful. I suppose if a person was an expert with apt, they could figure it out. I could read up on it and learn. I just think Ubuntu should be a little more user friendly than that.
