[edgy] right click for popup menus on status bar triggers menu items

Bug Description

I usually have some extensions on my status bar; their menus have become difficult to use: if i right click on the icons the menu appears and then disappear, as the menu item on which the cursor is at the moment of the click is triggered.

Right clicking without releasing the mouse button let you navigate the menu, otherwise the first item which is under the cursor at the moment of the click will be activated.

This gives me an old gtk1 feeling, and of course it's strange to see and to happen

Can you provide a screenshot or something so we can tell what you mean by this behavior.

sorry for the late answer, I've been very busy.

I'm attaching a screenshot but I think you should try it, to see...
The window must be maximized to see the bug.

The menu vertical offset is such that, right-clicking, the last menu command is triggered.

notice that mouse in screenshot appear much more lower than in reality (where is 2px higher), as you know mouse cursor is "redrawed" in screenshots...

I'm not sure this is a bug against Firefox, it just may be the extension.

maybe is a gtk/gnome thing?

When I used GNOME, i never had that issue either on Edgy. Have you tried a new profile?

Just tried a new profile. The bug is still there under GNOME. It is not reproducible under KDE (i've just tried to log in kde and firefox) so it must be a GTK/GNOME thing.

of course not GTK fault, I mean it is a firefox problem which happens only under GNOME

Does this happen when you run firefox in terminal using "firefox --safe-mode"

I am unable to reproduce this on edgy nor feisty.

@John: well actually that's useless because safe mode turns off all of the extensions and therefore every icon on the status bar goes away :/

Try switching to a different theme such as Glider or Clearlooks. That fixes it for me.

it does, but I've discovered it applies only to some extensions, which open the right click menu in a certain position (near the cursor): htmltidy and firebug suffer from this, while stylish and greasemonkey do not; in fact the latter show their menus right above the status bar; by the way, I still think is a Firefox+GTK bug even though extensions can workaround this...

I can confirm this bug is still happening in Gutsy Gibbon with Firefox 2.0.0.11 and with Minefield build 2008012004

I used the default Human theme for testing, both with Compiz enabled and disabled.

Firefox had a clean new theme with only adblock plus or greasemonkey installed. Both extensions had the same (buggy) behaviour.

Something similar happens to me when right clicking links on pages. Sometimes add bookmark comes up, sometimes the link opens in a new tab, sometimes a new window comes up, sometimes the page switches direction. Most times the menu appears though but it still is very irritating. :)

The problem seems to be that the menu appears on mouse down - not on mouse up. When running MS Windows the menu appears first when the mouse button is released. This way the button release from the click can not trigger any menu actions.

This bug is about activating the menu option, like new tab/window, add bookmarks, when doing a right-click. The option activated is the one where the mouse cursor is at. As such this is related to bug 187313. Marking it as a duplicate of it.
