Seems that when the linux-backports-wireless package was renamed to allow for multiple versions the original meta package was not converted into a transitional package to the new name. This leads to upgrade issues as there is no new version of the backport. This leads either to failed upgrades or to a loss of wireless after the upgrade. Neither good.

Pushed patches to the kernel-team@lists mailing list for review.

So you're supposed to use linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-generic instead (as instructed by the description in linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-2.6.35-23-generic), right? However, that package also does not exist!

Savvas, that's not the (meta-)package that doesn't exist, but the package that refers to the one which doesn't exist:

The thing is, apparently linux-backports-modules-wireless-maverick-generic has been replaced by a missing package. The linux-backports-modules-wireless-maverick-generic package was the one to install to make it always get the newest linux-backports-modules-wireless-<version>-generic (e.g. linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.35-22-generic):

$ apt-cache rdepends linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.35-22-generic
linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.35-22-generic
Reverse Depends:
  linux-backports-modules-wireless-maverick-generic
$

However, now that linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.35-22-generic has been replaced by linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-2.6.35-23-generic there is no such package:

$ apt-cache rdepends linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-2.6.35-23-generic
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-2.6.35-23-generic
Reverse Depends:
$

*That* is what this bug report is about.

It's probably fixed by now, but just to be sure:

$ apt-cache policy
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-maverick-generic
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-maverick-generic:

Use:
sudo apt-get install
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.36-maverick-generic

Mine was installed without any problems!

I noticed that you're using the "proposed" repository. If you remove the
proposed repository from your apt sources then it will probably be ok. :)
