Bug Description

If I insert any USB device into my laptop, the systems hangs instantly and then I'm forced to reset the computer.
If a deviced, like a mouse, is plugged before startup the cursor lags quite a bit. Doing a lsusb shows that all devices have been detected OK.

I have tried booting with acpi=off and noapic, hoping that would help, but without luck.

This problems occurs in both Dapper LTS and recent RC's of Edgy. Hoary and Breezy bots works great.

I have similar problem using USB. I use several USB devices on my laptop, a USB mouse, a USB keyboard, a USB IPW UMTS device (module: ipw). All work well on Windows and Ubuntu 5.10, but keyboard and IPW fails to work on 6.06 and 6.10 RC. it seems that the problem is in the new kernel usb handling. The system doesn't hang but the modem doesn't work and keyboard keeps sending a message in dmesg (something like IRQ, -32,...). It's perfectly recognized. Note: the keyboard works before "Preparing restricted drivers..."

I get no odd messages from dmesg that could be linked to the USB problem. Currently I run PCLinuxOS .93, which is based on kernel 2.6.16, that is one minor release more recent than the kernel of Dapper, and here everything works great.

I downloaded kubuntu 6.10, the keyboard works well in final release of kubunu 6.10 but the modem still doesn't work :(

I solved this problem by adding
irqpoll
anywhere in to grub boot command line and since this 'bug' seem to appear in any newer distribution, it can hardly be a Ubuntuspecific bug. Shouldn't it be deleted?

This bug has had no activity for a considerable period. This is a check to see if there is still interest in investigating this bug report.
Appears to have been solved with Kernel boot option.

I have no interest in any investigation of this bug. The solution is adding irqpoll to the boot line, and I've been using that in numerous distributions ever since with great succes.

Glad you have found the right kernel boot option.
This is a common problem with laptops especially. Manufacturers often build outside of accepted standards & workarounds need to be found.

You may find your laptop here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam

For the above reasons and for future reference, the following link specifies Ubuntu certified hardware.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, please note that this report will remain open against the actively developed kernel. Thank you for your continued support and help as we debug this issue.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
