Nibbles game will start but screen remains on splash image.

Nibbles will launch normally showing the splash screen graphic. When I start a new game (Game->New or press Ctrl-N) the bottom status bar changes to show the Worm scores but the main window remains on the title screen. I can see the worm scores and lives change as the game progresses so I know the game itself is running... just no game board graphics.

When launched in the terminal or launched with GDB there are no error messages or any other messages. There are no warnings or errors in any of the log files relating to nibbles or graphics adapters.
