Automatic generation of control points

We already have excellent autopano and autopano-sift, do we
need another tool to generate control points?

In my opinion, yes we do need another tool to generate control points. Autopano-sift often produces rubbish control points in my panoramas. The point fine-tuning algorithm in hugin is way better than the one in autopano-sift, and much faster too.

However, we can make it much simpler than a full implementation of autopano. Take a particular image pair which overlap. The normal way of producing control points (without autopano) is to match one point, and then just (effectively) click randomly all over the image, with auto-estimate, auto-fine-tune, and auto-add switched on. Hugin could do this automatically, by doing an edge detect and "clicking" on the strong edges, throwing away the matches that don't fine-tune well. This would certainly speed my work-flow up.

It already does this. On the control points screen, with the two images you want to add control points to, press the G key on your keyboard.

And this is documented somewhere?

Heck, even the documentation link from the Hugin web site is broken.

In any case, the tool has a habit of grouping all the newly-created control points really close together, which is not what I need.
