Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

X has started crashing relatively regularly on me. I cannot reproduce it but I have been using firefox each time it has crashed, but I assume that this is coincidence. I get the following backtrace on screen:

I am beginning to think that the crash is caused by firefox as it often happens while I am typing in the firefox address bar. Also gconf cannot be contacted after the crash. Bug 557514 mentions this but is fixed in Maverick so should not be present.

I wonder if it's anything to do with either of these:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=597016
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/539772?comments=all

That second one should be fixed. I'll test the first one when I get home.

I can't recreate the crash using sm. But it has now happened while I was using xcalc.

Same problem here, can reproduce the problem here:

Config:
Maverick, Firefox 3.6.13, Intel CPU graphics (Optimus graphics).

How to reproduce:
Open Firefox, enter www.rapidshare.com in the address bar and press enter.

On my Laptop, this always drops me back to the login screen immediately. Can't see anything in the Xorg log.

I think rapidshare changed their page, it doesn't crash X any more. To reproduce the problem I created an archive "kill_X.tar.gz" which crashes firefox each time. It contains a downloaded ebay HTML page. Just open the HTML-File from the archive an scroll down. In Opera I can see that it is obviously scrolling text which causes this behaviour.

I think this is a bug in xserver-xorg-video-intel since I saw this on 2 machines using the Intel i3-Clarkdale-CPU-integrated graphics. I upgraded the driver package from xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5.1 to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.13.901-2ubuntu2. This solves the problem for me.

The new package comes from the natty repostitory and can be found here:

Jamie Kitson, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given you already have done this in a prior release, performing this on a release prior to Trusty would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
