Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I run a bunch of panel applets, and have had many of them fail to start on login.
Unfortunately I do not remember the error message, but it will happen again, so when it does I'll write down the error message and post an update.

So far, applets that have failed this way are:
Indicator Applet Session
Clock
Hardware Monitor
Gnome Sensor Applet

Usually nothing fails. Occasionally just one of these will fail. Rarely, more than one will fail.
If I immediately log out and log back in, the failed panel applet is working again.

On a related note, the "Camera Monitor" applet quite often (but not always) brings up an error message claiming it is already running on login. This failure is not as annoying as it does not require a logout to recover from.

Since this affects so many different applets, I do not believe the problem is in the applets themselves, instead it must be in the gnome panel.

Different error today:

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_NotificationAreaApplet".
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

I've searched, and this seems to be the best bug to add a "me too" to. At most logins (classic desktop), I typically get the trash applet, window switcher, clock, and indicator applet fail to load, with an error message along the lines of "Clock applet quit unexpectedly".

With each applet that fails to load, the line:

** (gnome-panel:1748): WARNING **: Operation was cancelled

appears twice in ~/.xsession-errors

This has been going on for about 6 weeks now, and I guess it's because the developers are focusing on Unity that this problem has got so little attention. It's starting to drive me mad though, and I'm not far off flagging natty is too buggy to even test right now, and going back to a stable release.

Changed in gnome-panel (Ubuntu):

Today I got "Sorry, the program "hardware-monitor" closed unexpectedly. This is particularly odd since it is actually still running.
It is Hardware Monitor 1.4.2.

I have the option of reporting the problem, so I will attempt to do so, but it will probably go into a new bug.

This still occurs in 11/04. I don't remember it when first installed, so recent updates may have re-introduced this (if it was ever gone). This is on an Acer Aspire 5517 (AMD 64-bit) with the classic interface. As reported, re-logging in seems to bring things back. My gut suspicion is that on the first login after booting, something hasn't fully finished starting up, and the applets or the panel trips over it, or possibly something is very busy, and the panel's applet launcher or some call the applets all make times out.

Randomly on login (ie not always) gnome panel applets fail to start and give a 'XXX has quit unexpectedly' error popup window(s).

Applets affected for me are 'Weather Report', 'Gnubiff', and 'Indicator Applet Complete'.
Affected applets do not appear in panel.

Clicking on 'Reload' in the error window reloads the applet and adds them to panel apparently without problem.

I'm running 12.04 with gnome classic with 3d effects and a couple of gconftool mods to try to make it appear like Ubu 10.04
