Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

When I was trying to add this source and when I hit reload I got the error msgs

        - Then add to Software sources:
    deb http://apt.wxwidgets.org/ distname main
          DON'T forget to replace distname with the name of your distro like:
    for Ubuntu Jaunty: jaunty-wx
    for Debian Etch: etch-wx

E: Malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

When I close the error dialogue box it shuts down synaptic and when I reopen synaptic the same error box appears. Also when I try to Open Ubuntu software Center it won't open. Even after I do a shutdown and reboot I still get the same errors.

I had to reload Ubuntu to clear the problem

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

A simple workaround would've been to edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list, delete line 54. The problem lies in that line.
If you can reproduce this, please attach the file /etc/apt/sources.list.
Another comment: you could try another distro name, jaunty is a bit old. The repository doesn't have maverick-wx yet, but it does have a lucid-wx section too, try that.

Hi! Thanks for your bug report. The bug you describe is being tracked in an already existing bug report, so I will mark this bug as a duplicate of the other one. The workaround Robert mentioned in the comment above, ie removing line 54 of your /etc/apt/sources.list file, followed by the command 'sudo apt-get update' in the terminal should allow you to use software-center and synaptic again. Please continue to report any bugs you may find in software-center. Thanks again for your help!
