Yes, it seems to be the same. Both the problem and fix lead to very similar results. It didn't say anything about gdesklets-data for me.
By adding the extended line it works now.

By the way...I tried to install the newest version I could find (0.36.3), but it complained about some dependencies (pygtk-2.0 and others), whose package names seemed not to be in the repositories. After looking around a bit, I gave up.

This is a ubuntu (only) bug.

To fix it: please use a newer version of gDesklets!

gDesklets 0.36.2 has been released on February 28th, 2010.
gDesklets 0.36.3 has been released on January 23th, 2011.

Ubuntu is still shipping gDesklets 0.36.1, which has been released on November 2nd 2008.
Yes, no typo: 2008 !!!

99% of these "gDesklets not working with ubuntu xx.yy" bugs have been fixed (a long time ago)....

Hello Bjoern,

Thanks for the update.

I compiled version 0.36.2 and it launched fine and integrates nicely
with Gnome.

That is unfortunate the ubuntu repositories are that out of date.
