Bug Description

Binary package hint: ntfs-3g

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 installed on my laptop in a dual-boot configuration. It seems that files copied from Ubuntu onto the NTFS-formatted Windows 7 partition cannot be read in Windows 7, which fails with the error "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Also, having copied a directory from Ubuntu to \Users\Jacob\Application Data, when cd'ing into the Application Data folder and running dir, I receive the error "File Not Found".

There are many other reports about this problem, some dating back to 2008:

Hi,

What ntfs-3g version are you using ?

I am not sure for Windows 7, which I do not have, but on Vista there is no "Application Data" directory any more, it has been replaced by a symbolic link :

[linux@pavilion2 ~]$ ls -l "/vista/Users/Jean-Pierre_2/Application Data"
lrwxrwxrwx 2 linux root 180 Nov 8 2008 /vista/Users/Jean-Pierre_2/Application Data -> /vista/Users/Jean-Pierre_2/AppData/Roaming

The Vista symbolic links are supported by ntfs-3g since ntfs-3g-2009.11.14

PS The links you reference are related to problems which have been fixed long ago.

Regards

Jean-Pierre

I'm in Windows 7 at the moment, so I can't tell you the exact version, but It's whatever is used by the most up-to-date Ubuntu 10.04.

I didn't know this, but I think it is probably true for Windows 7 as well. I did copy data from Ubuntu into the Application Data directory, which appears to have made it no longer navigable in Windows 7 by cmd.exe, which fails with the above error, or Windows Explorer, which fails with a "permission denied" error, even when run in Administrator mode. Strangely, navigation is possible using Cygwin.

I used these links because they seem to be correctly identify the behaviour I am currently observing. So maybe these issues have not actually been fixed, given that they seem to be occuring on my machine.

Hi,

I cannot provide precise help unless I know the exact version of ntfs-3g you use (type "ntfs-3g --help" obviously on Linux).

What you say about "Application Data" seems to indicate that this is not a directory on Windows 7. If you are using an old version of ntfs-3g, you have to put your files into the symlink target (this could be \Users\Jacob\AppData\Roaming, but check this first). Since ntfs-3g-2009.11.14 the symlink is supported by ntfs-3g.

The references you indicate are relative to the object_id file (file nr 25), which Windows uses to track a file which has been deleted from a shortcut still present. This has been fixed since ntfs-3g-2010.3.6 (but the shortcut remains unusable).

If you have another type of problem, please indicate your mount options and the exact steps to get the error.
