On login to ubuntu netbook, menu bar and dock transparent, no icons

Sometimes they do not show up at all. Currently I have to use ubuntu desktop, but occasionally I try again to login to ubuntu netbook. It never works. When I hold down ctrl-alt-del, the icons, dock and menu bar show up for a split second. Other processes also achieve this.
