Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 10.10
Totem Movie Player 2.32.0
The dvd is obviously recognized as present in the drive, because it shows under "Places" as "LITTLE MERMAID_2". When I click on it, it shows two file folders: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS along with a button that says, "Open Movie Player". When I click the button, the Totem Movie Player opens and I get:
"Could not read from resource."

Anybody have any ideas how to proceed?

I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras. This had no effect.

The VLC player has the same problem. The dvd drive works, and I can see the file folders and files on the dvd, but when I try to play one, it won't play them.

I tried other DVD's in the drive. A friend's DVD, Red Versus Blue, which is a non-copyrighted dvd, played fine. However, "The Patriot" had the same problem.

This makes me think it has something to do with copyright protection.

ubuntu-restricted extras installs libdvdread4 but the process does not end there if you require css decryption. donald, can you please use the following two commands and let us know if you are able to play copy-protected video DVDs (Little Mermaid, Patriot) afterwards.

1. Install libdvdread4 (may already be installed):
$ sudo apt-get install libdvdread4

2. Then install libdvdcss (through script which gets libdvdcss2.deb from medibuntu and installs it):
$ sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

I had the exact same problem. I did as stated in the 12/15 comment by komputes, and his second command fixed the problem. Thank you very much.
