Bug Description

Testing the Ubuntu Edgy Eft RC desktop CD discovered the following bug:

I have a Targa Traveller 826 which has a Mobility Radeon X700. Ubuntu is currently suffering from a bug that makes it impossible to run X on the internal display when using the radeon driver included in X.org. See https://launchpad.net/products/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/22985
for details

The ubuntu desktop CDs have an option of booting in "safe graphics mode". Afaik, X is supposed to use the vesa driver in this case, which would work. However, When booting ubuntu with that option, X would still use the radeon driver. This consequentially results in a black display, rendering X unuseable on this machine.

According to the bug report referred above, this might happen on a number of machines with Radeon graphics chipsets.
