Can you look at

System->Preferences->Power Management

and check your settings when running on AC and Battery ?

Can you check whether acpi-support package is installed on your system ? Also is acpid is running on your system ?

Moving to gnome power manager since the brightness controls are not displayed on the System->Preferences->Power Management.

Investigating further to see what enables this option.

I have this exact same issue on my Lenovo 3000 N100. I checked in gconf and all of the settings seem appropriate and i set the dim level to 50 percent so that it would be very noticeable. Still no luck.

Pappan did you find out what enables those options to be visible in the gnome-power-manager GUI?

I have the same problem on Gutsy on HP DV2220tx..i have NVIDIA 7200 with proprietary drivers...
i had the same issue even on Feisty....
Can somebody let us know what needs to be done to fix it...and by the way the bug is still new and undecided after 1 year....thats not good development....
I hoped that with Gutsy this would be resolved...unfortunately it is not...

Cannot confirm this on a Dell C610 in Hardy Alpha 5.
Screen dims. How much it dims is also set in
BIOS. Maybe that needs to be configured.

I still have the screen dimming problem with Gutsy. I have not tried Hardy to still if the problem exists there still, but I have the current Hardy LiveCD downloading atm to test. As for the BIOS I have nothing in my BIOS for setting the brightness of the screen for when it goes on to battery.

This will most likely be hardware dependent - some laptops will work and some won't.

Looking at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager could someone attach:

gconftool --recursive-list /apps/gnome-power-manager > gpm.gconf.values.txt

Could you try running this command and unplugging and then plugging in your power adaptor?

 lshal -m > lshal.log.txt

Could you then attach the text files to this bug?

Having a similar problem, on Acer 8204. Screen is very dim and plugging/unplugging makes no difference.

As a workaround, disabled all dimming and set /proc/acpi/acer/brightness (was 0) seems to do the trick manually.
