Bug Description

Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy Eft"

Trying to copy a large file (the Service Pack 2 of Windows XP) to my USB flash memory, it begins the copy but some seconds later it stops with this error (from console):

"cp: scrittura di `/media/usbdisk/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ITA.exe': Errore di I/O"

(translated from Italian: ""cp: writing of `/media/usbdisk/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ITA.exe': I/O error"

... and pops up a message saying the disk wasn't correctly disconnected (so it seems like the system loses the connection with the drive).

Filesystem is FAT32.

On Windows XP the flash drive works fine.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproductable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

Well, I use Arch Linux now... however, I workarounded this bug using the external power supplier for the USB hub (instead of taking the power from the USB port only). *But* note that on Microsoft Windows it worked fine also without the external power supplier.

The problem DOES NOT occur with this kind of pendrive.
So, I believe, it's a hardware problem afterall, but I don't understand why and how...

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks.

I confirm this bug on Intepid Ibex 8.10.
Tried kernels 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.24-19.
Works only when enabling USB 1.1.
Works with transcend tsonic630 2Gb, but doesn't with kingston data traveler 8Gb.
Flash drive was formatted under WinXP and works fine under Win.

    lsusb:

Bus 006 Device 002: ID 0402:5661 ALi Corp. <- working transcend

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
