By the way, I have been able to work around this:

1. Backup Evolution settings.
2. Export personal contacts to a .vcf file
3. Erase all personal contacts
4. Backup Evolution to a different file (i.e. "nocontacts.tar...")
5. Import the empty file
6. Import the .vcf file to the personal address book.

Note that steps 4 and 5 seem redundant, but through all the iterations, it seems I had to do it in order for it to work.

Hope that is useful to anyone else having this problem.

This seems to no longer be an issue in 11.04. FYI. Feel free to close it.
