Bug Description

Binary package hint: ucf

The use of ':' in the filenames in /var/lib/ucf/cache/ causes the kernel's generation of an initramfs image to fail. If you use an Ubuntu-based rootfs in CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE in your kernel config, you'll get the following error when it's building the initramfs:
/usr/src/linux/linux-2.6.32/usr/Makefile:50: *** target pattern contains no `%'. Stop.
make[1]: *** [usr] Error 2
make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

Tested with Lucid and 2.6.32 kernel with latest Ubuntu patches. This could be addressed by modifying the kernel's initramfs generation code or by choosing a more friendly delimiter in the ucd filename.

That's a buggy assumption in the upstream initramfs-generating code, then, not in ucf. ucf quite deliberately uses a character to replace / (which isn't allowed in filenames) that is unlikely to occur.

affects: ucf (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Hi GeekSmith,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 671158

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
