Bug Description

Just spent the last 4 days trying to load a minimal server config on 4 servers - finally done this only to discover that eth0 is UP but not RUNNING.

All the servers have static IPs.

I have tried removing "interface-mtu" from /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf - no effect.

looking at dmesg, I have ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready - otherwise dmesg seems to pass everything else

ifconfig says that eth0 is UP but not RUNNING

Not too sure how to procede on this one - I'm stumped. I've looked at a lot of similar issues, such as removing the NetworkManager (which isn't installed).

very grateful for any form of feedback on this

Thanks and regards

I just swapped eth0 for eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces and I have the same result, so it's not to do with the broadcom controller, just the standard install (?).

Just tried 'ifconfig eth1 up' .... no problems
Just tried 'ifconfig eth1 running' .... and got a Host name lookup failure. If I do 'hostname' I get the correct hostname and if I do a 'hostname -i' I get the correct ip address.

I have two ethernet ports at the back of the machine - port1 which is eth0 and port2 which is eth1. By accident this morning I connected the lan cable to the wrong port (port2 instead of port1) to continue this severe ubuntu installation failure and everything works.

This is the dumbest mistake I have ever made. Apologies for taking up everyones time.
