This is in Ubuntu 10.10, presently fully up-to-date.

There is an upstream bug report in the libao package here that appears to have a patch to fix the problem (I have not yet had a chance to test it): https://trac.xiph.org/ticket/1689

This bug is fixed in libao version 1.1.0.

I got around this in ubuntu by downloading the libao packages from debian. They install fine. Hopefully ubuntu updates to 1.1.0 soon to fix this.

Oh, I should note the bug is marked fixed released, but it isn't. The version in natty (1.0.0-5) still has this problem but the debian packages do not.

According to Debian's BTS, this was fixed in libao 1.1.0-1, so I will mark this bug as fixed in Ubuntu as well.
