Bug Description
I have used Ubuntu since 5.10, and really enjoyed 5.10. When 6.06 came out, I attempted to use it as well. I had no problems with video on my desktop computer, however, 6.06 & higher won't detect the proper monitor on my Gateway Solo 9500.
I have not found any places to change the monitor in Ubuntu - only option is to change the screen resolution and frequency. The monitor is a fairly common LG (LG 1520). If I install 5.10 on this laptop, it works flawlessly. If I fresh install 6.06 (and now 6.10) it doesn't work - it has a split screen and no way to correct it. Ubuntu needs a way to select the monitor like other flavors of Linux have, or allow the installer to select a monitor on installation. Safe graphics mode doesn't work either. If I use newer than 5.10, I have to install 5.10, and then upgrade it. It then seems to work.
Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'x-display-

Just to add here, it's really difficult to determine exactly which part of "x" this is from, but the laptop display just isn't recognized. Again 5.10 correctly recognizes it, but 6.06 or higher with a clean install won't. Upgrading from 5.10 will retain the monitor settings.
I've also noticed Kubuntu 5.10 is the same, and 6.06 versions won't correctly install either, but, Kubuntu allows you to select a monitor. Would this be too difficult to add to Ubuntu?
