Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

I use Ubuntu since 7.04, and i always install a new version removing the last one.
Since Ubuntu 10.10, i've been confronted to a serious problem, how dificult my work as a student in programation.
Nautilus become very slow, with all kind of operation :
- Open simple folders with a lot of files
- Open simple folders with zero files.
- Move the mouse without getting all the window frozen.

And when i look at the System monitor he show me that Nautilus is using 105mb of ram !

How can i do to solve to problem ? I have the last actualized Nautilus without any extra, and, i have removed appmenu-gtk.

Thanks in advance,
And sorry for my very bad english :S...

Hi !
Not really :s the only solution I found is using the sudo command to open nautilus.
Once I have the time I will try to have a look at the code of nautilus to see what is wrong... maybe cache... but i'm pretty sure the cause of the problem it's the preview settings .

Hope this help,
Thanks in advance,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please try to obtain a valgrind log following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind and attach the file to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your problem.

could you attach a sample file that is causing that issue as well? thanks.

Hi there,
Update of the situation :
Because the bug has becoming too handicapping for my work, i decide to format my Ubuntu partition and install/configure Arch linux (yes shame on me blablabla). On Arch nautilus work perfectly. But after a few weeks, i decide to go back to Ubuntu 10.10, and, surprising no bug !...

But, last night, i was cutting (CTRL + X) a folder, and copying to another folder, when nautilus stop working and i chose to kill the process in the System monitor, after that the bug come back again.

Solution ? Delete the folder I tried to copy on the 2 directory and it works.

So i think, this bug only happens when there is some action in the background that Nautilus didn't got the time to finish, so he tries to do it since the moment we Boot the OS until we shutdown this one..

And he starts to eat a LOT of memory ram (1GB just for nautilus...) which is unacceptable.

I tried to reset the nautilus config's, delete the nautilus folder, cache etc... but no solution (until i deleted the folders)...

So if anyone from Nautilus know where do comes the problem and how to solve it (for people that still have the problem).

PS : I Don't know if there is a coincidence, but this bug only happens when i was using an Intel Dual-Core Processor (with my notebook or my desktop... no problems on my netbook and my girlfriend's netbook).

PSS: Once again sorry for my very bad English, I promise I will try to do better the next time :S...

Thanks in Advance

Thank you Aliasbody! Your post helped me solve my problem...

After I read that post, I realized that Nautilus started lagging and chewing up RAM, when I was copying files from my external hard drive to my cpu. I must have interrupted Nautilus while it was copying...and ever since it has been trying to complete that action...even after rebooting and reinstalling Nautilus & removing all add on's. Hopefully these steps will help other "Newbies" like myself!

1. SYSTEM >>> ADMINISTRATION >>> SYSTEM MONITOR

2. Click on "Processes" & right click on "Nautilus", click on "Memory Maps" and click on the column that says "VM Size" (this will sort the column so you can see what specific folder or file is hogging up the memory). There is nothing else you can do here, but you can leave it open so you can remember the file location!

3. (OPTIONAL) If your computer is lagging due to Nautilus chewing memory, open a terminal and type in "nautilus -q"...that will quit & restart Nautilus.

4. Open "Nautilus" and navigate to the folder or file that was chewing up all of the memory and delete it!

I hope this helps someone out. After I found the folder that was causing trouble & deleted it....my Ubuntu Studio 10.10 is running FLAWLESSLY!

I guess its a problem with 64 bit.

After reinstalltion (pae->64bit) Nautilus has the same problem as described here
Before it wasnt that Ram eater.

I mentioned this problem a year ago, when i was using a 64 bit System.
The Less RAM overall on PAE was about 200 MB with exactly the same config
