Bug Description

This is a Main Inclusion Request for "synaptiks" package.

1. Availability:

The package is already in universe and it builds for i386, amd64, armel and powerpc which are the architectures that exist in Natty.

2. Rationale:

The package replaces another package we currently support and promises higher quality and/or better features, so that we can drop the old package from the supported set. Synaptiks replaces kcm-touchpad.
In addiction, this package helps to meet better this Blueprint goal: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/kubuntu-lucid-touchpad-config

3. Security:

The following checks have been done and no vulnerabilities have been found:

 - There aren't results found searching in the National Vulnerability Database using the package as a keyword. http://cve.mitre.org/cve/cve.html

 - There aren't results found in http://secunia.com/advisories/search/: searching for the package as a keyword.

 - There aren't references to this package in Ubuntu CVE Tracker (universe, main and partner).

 - The package does not install executables in /sbin, /usr/sbin

 - The package does not install init scripts in /etc/init.d/

 - As far as we know, the package does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024).

 - As far as we know, the package does not provide add-ons or plugins to security-sensitive software in the system.

 - The package ships a KDE daemon (kded daemon) (/usr/lib/kde4/kded_synaptiks.so)

4. Quality assurance:

  - The package is easily usable after installation across the KDE Systemsettings control center.

  - The package does not ask for debconf questions.

  - There are signs about upstream still cares for this package. Upstream feedback can be found in the project upstream page in: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/synaptiks?content=114270

  - There isn't major bugs open against synaptiks, only one minor bug found in DBTS: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=597038, this bug seems to be trivial of fixing.

  - The package is well maintained in Debian by the "KDE Extras Team", and in Ubuntu by the "Ubuntu Developers" and also has interest by the "Kubuntu Developers".

  - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we doesn't support.

  - The package does not ship a test suit.

5. UI standards:

  - Synaptiks is translatable to other languages and in fact, it has already translations for several languages. It uses the KDE translation way, as it is a KDE application.

  - The package ships a standard conformant .desktop file easily accesible from the KDE Systemsettings control center.

6. Dependencies:

 - All synaptiks dependencies (included build depedencies) are already included in main repository section.

7. Standards compliance:

  - The package complains with the Debian Standards version 3.8.4 as like as specified in the debian source package.
  - We haven't found any aspect which contradicts the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard.

8. Maintenance:

  - The package is well maintained in Debian by the "KDE Extras Team", and in Ubuntu by the "Ubuntu Developers" and also has interest by the "Kubuntu Developers".

9. Background information:

  - The package description seems to be very complete and understandable:
 touchpad configuration tool (synaptiks)
synaptiks touchpad configuration tool. this package contains a
configuration tool for touchpads. The package provides a kcm
module (for systemsettings), as well as a plasma widget and kded
module to help managing touchpads, especially in KDE environments

The kcm-touchpad package should be removed instead of demoted to universe.
