Bug Description

Hi there
I have a problem with my HP dv6 2050eo after upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 and then to 10.10. The network manager doesn't show the available wireless networks in 10.04 and 10.10.
If I boot up in windows or on a live cd with 9.10 (and when I had the 9.10 working) the networks are visible and available.

I have this info from the 10.10 with the ethernet working.

morten@morten-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is your laptops wireless switch switched on?
* Does your laptop have a keyboard shortcut for enabling/disabling wireless?
* If the answer for the above question is yes, does turning on your hardware wireless switch and toggling the wireless using the keyboard shortcut change anything?

This might help us to find and resolve the problem.

Regarding the wireless switch on the laptop - it is active (blue light) and if I right-click the network manager icon, it says wireless network 'not connected' (something like that - i'm running the danish version) - but if I touch the laptop wireless switch, it turns red and the right-click on network manager icon, says 'deactivated' for the wireless network.
I have no knowledge of a keyboard shortcut switch.

Regarding the iwlist:
morten@morten-laptop:~$ iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

Thank you for your efforts

This kernel will also soon make it's way into the upcoming Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal", hopefully before alpha 3 on March 3rd.

Sorry to say, but the 2.6.38-rc6 didn't do the trick for me. Just using it with the 10.10 ubuntu resolved in a commandline logon screen. Then I tried the natty from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.38-rc6-natty/ in a live session using a usb stick, but after boot up there was still no available wireless networks presented. If you're interested in some logs, please let me know.

Wireless connects, but drops constantly in the first 15 minutes. After that it's stable. But when disconnected, same problem.

Once it is connected, iwlist scan works, finding my network, and a few others in the area.
This is fresh install of natty. This is a regression as the same card worked fine under 10.10.

should this be same bug, or separate?

Hi

Just a short update to this.
I have upgraded to 11.04, but that had no effect on the wireless - it's still not visible in networkmanager.

There is the following info from the 11.04 system:
morten@morten-ubuntu:~$ sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

The upstream bug is reporting a problem when using AR9285 as an access point. In the reports here the wireless is in either ad-hoc or managed mode, so the upstream bug really isn't the same as the issue reported here. Removing the upstream bug tracker.

Note that if you are trying to connect to an access point you should be using managed mode rather than ad-hoc.

Please test the 2.6.38.8 mainline build to see if the problem persists there. If it doesn't we can look into a bisection to try and track down the commit that introduced the problem. The 2.6.38.8 mainline build is available at:
